The King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital has started a plasma bank to provide timely treatment to coronavirus patients. The family of the COVID-19 patients and hospital have faced troubles arranging plasma for the treatment. Therefore, the donors will be examined at the departmental level so that they don’t face inconvenience.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to start first plasma plant in Mumbai at KEM hospital to facilitate the supply of plasma. Required materials and manpower will be made available in the coming days and the plasma plant will be operational in two weeks.

The hospital currently has a collection of more than 350 plasma and the process of storing and delivering the same continues. A plasma bank will be created to centralise it. Meanwhile, more than 30 plasma bags have been provided to other private and government hospitals for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The plasma can be stored for up to a year and the same will be supplied, as per the requirement, from the plasma plant at KEM hospital. The eligibility of donors is determined before they donate plasma which causes inconvenience to them. In order to resolve the issue, the donors will be screened at the departmental corona control room or the nearest health centre to minimise the crowd.
