The central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) recently announced a drive against the harassment of women in order to help the female doctors to openly come forward with their complaints. While the association is planning to launch the initiative, some hospitals already have established anti-harassment cells for the doctors.

The drive was initiated after a study published in Reproductive Health Matters stated that 77 out 135 women health workers, consisting of doctors, nurses and other healthcare assistants in two government and two private hospitals had experienced sexual harassment.

In a conversation with public and private hospital doctors, it was learnt that the doctors have been physically abused by relatives on several occasion. After talking, it was decided that a separate department would be formed to stop the violence and quarrels against the doctors.

In the small hospitals and clinics across the state, doctors are assaulted and several times face sexual harassment, obscene motives. However, doctors often do not take any step towards it. Therefore, this department has been created to get firmly behind the problem and provide them justice. We are sure that this effort to solve the problems of the doctors’ complaints will lead to a safer atmosphere for them,” said Dr. Lokesh Chirvatkar, President, MARD.
