Since March 2020, the state has been fighting against coronavirus, and after successive months of lockdown, officials are now allowing relaxations, for economic activities to resume in the state. While the cases have reduced in Mumbai and some other divisions, officials, in a recent development, witnessed the first case of coronavirus reinfection.

As per reports, one of the doctors working at Sion Hospital in Mumbai has tested positive for coronavirus, once again, after recovering from the infection two months back. This patient becomes the first case reinfection in the city, however, experts state that the symptoms are mild and there are no concerns with regards to the treatment.

The female doctor is a representative of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and works in the anaesthesia department at Sion Hospital.

She was infected with coronavirus again, around two weeks back, and after testing positive, she was admitted to Andheri-based Seven Hills Hospital for further treatment. While she recovered from the treatment two months ago, this new possibility of reinfection has raised concerns among the medical fraternity, however, doctors have confirmed that the infection was not severe, and she will be quarantined as per protocol.

Cases of coronavirus reinfections have been reported in the US, Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong and other countries, however, there has been no academic reports released yet. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had also denied any cases of reinfection until this patient had reported COVID-19 again.

Scientists have said that the reinfection may not be as severe as the initial COVID-19 infection, and the immunity one gains might only be for a few months. Research is being conducted to study the same.

As of Friday, September 4, 2020, Mumbai had a total of 1,52,024 cases with 7,799 deaths. Maharashtra witnessed the highest single-day jump on Friday taking the coronavirus tally to 8,63,062 and 25,964 deaths.
