The Mankoli flyover, in Bhiwandi that leads towards Thane on the Thane-Nashik Highway, was opened for the commuters without an official inauguration on Monday, September 21.

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray cancelled the inauguration of the Mankoli flyover in suburban Mumbai after the building collapse in Bhiwandi, where at least 16 people were killed. Nearly 20 to 25 people were rescued safely whereas at least 20 were injured in the incident. According to the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC), nearly 24 flats of the building collapsed out of the 48.

CM Uddhav Thackeray and deputy CM Ajit Pawar were earlier slated to inaugurate the flyover at around 1:30 pm on Monday. The inauguration was to be held in the presence of Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad and other people's representatives at 1.30 pm. Accordingly, MMRDA had made the necessary preparations. However, after the building accident at Bhiwandi in the morning, the administration and the people's representatives rushed to Bhiwandi and the relief work started quickly, after which the public offering program was cancelled.

The MMRDA has set up the flyover to cover the Thane-Dombivali distance in half an hour and ease traffic congestion in the city. The flyover has been constructed on the creek between Reti bunder Mothagaon on the Dombivali side and Mankoli on Bhiwandi side.
