The two-day monsoon session of Maharashtra Legislature began on Monday amid chaos over COVID-19 test reports. As a preventive measure, the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) had decided that it was mandatory for legislators to undergo antigen tests.

The BAC of the Maharashtra legislature had made changes in the seating arrangements for the members to ensure that social distancing is practised during the two-day monsoon session.

However, on the first day, some MLAs including former Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Haribhau Bagade were not allowed to enter the premises which led to a chaotic situation outside Vidhan Bhavan. The staff was also made to stand outside early morning due to the absence of test reports.

The MLAs who were not allowed inside the Vidhan Bhavan premises raised the issue with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. After Pawar’s invention, the legislators were allowed inside the premises.

The Deputy CM called up legislature secretary Rajendra Bhagwat and asked him to ensure entrance of those who have tested negative. The chaos, however, happened due to unavailability of test reports on time.

Meanwhile, at least two MLAs and 37 government staffers who were to attend the monsoon session were tested positive for the coronavirus. Nearly 2,200 people were tested which includes legislators and government officials, although some of the reports are yet to be received.

This was the shortest monsoon session in the history of Maharashtra legislature and the first one for the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Earlier in March, the session was cut short by almost a week due to the coronavirus outbreak.
