The ambitious Coastal Road Project in Mumbai will have the largest underground tunnel in the country. Work on the underground tunnel on Coastal Road will start from January 2021. This work will be completed in 18 months.

There will be two tunnels of 2.082 km on Coastal Road. China-made TBM will be used to dig these tunnels. This machine has been named as 'Mawla'. The diameter of this machine is 12.19 meters. It is by far the largest machine by diameter that is being deployed in India.

The Indo-China border tension has also caused a little delay in this project since the civic body was finding it difficult to find Chinese engineers to assemble the TBM.

The 10.6 Km long Coastal Road stretch will be part of the first phase of the project. It will extend from Girgaum Chowpatty to the Worli side of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Further, the project will also include underground parking at four regions, with the largest parking space located at Haji Ali, offering parking space for up to 1,200 cars. Meanwhile, Worli and Amarsons will have parking lots that can hold up to 200 cars at a time. The authorities have also planned a Bus Rapid Transit System at Worli.

In addition to the road, the Coastal Road project will also consist of a pedestrian promenade spanning 7.7 Km from Priyadarshini Park to Haji Ali and from Haji Ali to Worli.

Despite the lockdown, BMC has managed to finish 17 per cent of the work. The project is delayed and the civic body expects that the work will be completed by July 2023 now.
