Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut has directed for the emphasis to be laid upon the recovery of electricity bills to recover the financial position of the energy department from a deficit.

At the same time, Raut has directed officials to find fresh sources of income, reduce borrowing from external sources and increase credit for future loans. As per reports, amidst the coronavirus-induced lockdown, the energy department has resulted in a deficit of ₹14,662 crores.

Moreover, the Minister reviewed the financial condition of all the three power companies of the state government namely Mahatransport, MSEDCL and Mahanirmithi. Minister of State for Energy Prajakt Tanpure, Principal Secretary Asim Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahatrans Dinesh Waghmare, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahanirmiti Sanjay Khandare and Finance Directors of all the three companies were present on the occasion.

Furthermore, Raut stated that priority should be given to recovery of pending bills from Municipalities, Corporations and Government Offices in the State while providing relief in electricity bills during the lockdown period. In addition, letters should be sent to all MLAs and Guardian Ministers asking for suggestions on the recovery.

There are 23 million household electricity consumers in the state out of which 90 lakh consumers use only 0 to 50 units. This was pointed out by Uttam Zalte, Technical Adviser to the Minister of Energy. After that, the meter of 0 to 50 unit users should be checked. For this, the officers should go to the field and check it themselves, Raut added.
