The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), through recently shared information, revealed that the body is set to float tenders for the construction of the Radio Club Jetty, a project envisaged 16 years ago. The Radio Club Jetty, which is expected to cost approximately INR 165 crore, is set to decongest the Gateway of India, a popular tourist destination in Mumbai. The jetty is set to be ready in 2025, according to Amit Saini, the CEO of the MMB. A detailed report regarding the same was published in the Indian Express.
Radio Club Jetty Design and Capacity
The Radio Club Jetty is designed to resemble a tennis racquet and will have 10 fingers or docking spaces where 20 boats can be parked. According to Saini, the jetty will be spacious and exclusively cater to passenger movement through waterways. He added that the jetty will accommodate more boats than what is currently handled at the Gateway of India.

Passenger Facilities and Passenger Traffic Management
The MMB is set to provide passenger facilities at the Radio Club Jetty, including a cafeteria, ticket counters, parking facility, and a landscaped green area. Saini mentioned that the jetty will have no other commercial activity, such as banquet halls, meant for weddings or other events.
The Gateway of India, a popular tourist destination in Mumbai, saw nearly 22.20 lakh passenger traffic in 2022-23 (till Feb 2023), up from 12.23 lakh in the previous year. The New Ferry Wharf built by the Mumbai Port Authority at Mazgoan dock handled 4.67 lakh passengers in the same period.
Other Projects undertaken by Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB)
In addition to the Radio Club Jetty, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has recently announced several other projects to develop water transport infrastructure in the state. One such project is the construction of a new jetty at the Ferry Wharf in Mumbai, which is expected to cost around Rs 80 crore. The new jetty will be equipped with state-of-the-art passenger amenities and will cater to the increasing demand for water transport services in the city.

Another project announced by the MMB is the development of a new marina at Dighi in Raigad district, which is expected to cost around INR 250 crore. The marina will be built over an area of 45 hectares and will have facilities for boat parking, repair, and maintenance. It will also have a clubhouse, restaurants, and other amenities for visitors.
The MMB is also planning to develop water transport facilities in other parts of Maharashtra, such as Alibaug, Murud, and Chiplun. These projects aim to provide better connectivity and more efficient transport services to residents and tourists alike.
