The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has finally planned to undertake mitigation and prevention work at the Western Express Highway near Kandivali, around five months after a landslide blocked access to a portion of the road.

The landslide occurred in August as heavy rain hit the region overnight resulting in mud and rocks flooding over the roads. The closure of this portion leads to traffic jams and congestions, particularly during peak hour traffic.

Speaking to mid-day, an official from the MMRDA said, “In order to prevent further incidents of landslides, we have invited tenders for stabilisation and mitigation work in the area near the Times of India building on the Western Express Highway near Bandongari Hill, Kandivli.”

The official went on to say that the agency or company that receives the contract will have to remove the loose boulders in the region while also taking steps to prevent rocks from falling on the road.

Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay visited the region after the landslide and inspected the region. Following the visit, they submitted a technical report on the landslide while also offering recommendations. The official said that additional work and the removal of loose boulders will be undertaken based on these recommendations.

“As per the report submitted by IIT-Bombay after removing the loose boulders, a retaining wall of Reinforced Cement Concrete will be constructed till the half portion of the rocky patch, and steel nets would be installed above it to prevent landslide,” the official said.

Metropolitan Commissioner of the MMRDA, R A Rajeev echoed the same words. “The work is being done as per the advice of IIT-Bombay. This will not only help in the conservation of the affected area, but will also prevent further landslides,” he said.

The blocked portion of the road is crucial in connecting Dahisar to Bandra. Meanwhile, motorists from Mira Road, Thane, Ghodbunder Road, Ahmedabad, and so on access it on a regular basis to reach Bandra and South Mumbai.
