In a bid to make the process of renting apartments more convenient and hassle-free, the Mumbai Police has waived the requirement for a No Objection Certificate (NOC). This means that citizens no longer have to acquire an NOC from the police to rent out a flat or apartment in the city.

However, the police have laid down certain guidelines that must be followed when renting out properties. One of the guidelines is the process for submitting information about the tenant to the police. The police have made it easy for citizens to provide this information by offering online facilities. Alternatively, one can submit an application in person at the relevant police station or send it via registered mail.

Once the application has been submitted, the police will send an OTP to the flat or house owner's contact information. It is important to note that the addresses of the landlord and the rented property cannot be the same, and both parties are responsible for ensuring that the information on the form is accurate. Providing false information to the police is a serious offence that may result in legal action being taken.

To make this service more accessible to citizens, the Mumbai Police has introduced online facilities to report rented apartments or homes. The service is free, and if anyone demands money or engages in misconduct, it should be reported to senior police officers.

Recently, the Mumbai Police had issued a normal preventive order for property owners and those seeking to rent out space. This is due to the conditions in areas under the control of the Mumbai Commissioner of Police, where anti-social elements may seek refuge in residential areas, leading to a breach of peace and a danger to human life and property.

The preventive order had said that therefore, any landlord or property owner who has rented out any accommodations to anyone must immediately provide the tenant's specifics on the citizen portal at www.mumbaipolice.gov.in. This is to ensure that the police are aware of who is residing in the rented property and can take appropriate action in case of any untoward incidents.
