According to the latest reports, Mumbai's second cable-stayed bridge, the Reay Road Bridge, is expected to be completed by May 2024. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MahaRail) announced last week that 70% of the project has been completed.

The ROB is 385 metres long, with two down ramps and six lanes. The cost of the project has been projected to be INR 145 crore. May 2024 opening is two months late than the initial deadline. Once opened, the bridge will improve the city's east-west connectivity.

The construction of the bridge includes ongoing superstructure and girder launching, with the foundation construction already completed. The bridge is being built with a centre pylon system, placing stay cables on the bridge's central spine girder.

This design allows for fewer piers and foundations. The segments are also prepared and then taken to the construction site. Additionally, a simple girder system is used. This will provide a quicker and simpler construction.

Negotiations are currently underway with the Central Railway to take blocks in March. The Central Railway and Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) had to relocate one ticket counter and fifteen GI sheds from the workshop, and 130 huts have been cleared.

The new longer-span cable-stayed ROB reduces violations with underground facilities. The bridge will feature six lanes with pathways for walkers and smooth traffic flow. The bridge's construction will allow traffic to travel via Barrister Nath Pai Road's underpass while maintaining the necessary vertical clearance for vehicles to pass beneath the eastern motorway. The bridge will also feature LED lighting to enhance its aesthetic appeal.

MahaRail plans to rebuild ten deteriorating road overbridges (ROB) from the British era, including the vital Reay Road cable-stayed bridge. The bridge began construction in February 2022 and is expected to be completed by May 2024, provided all right-of-way (ROW) is cleared.
