The Tata Projects Ltd has won the bid to construct the new Parliament building at a cost of ₹861.90 crores.

The historical building happens to be 92 years old. The new building is to be built as part of the Narendra Modi government’s plan to redevelop the Central Vista in New Delhi.

As per reports, the building needs renovation, moreover, during the monsoons, several problems arise because of the ancient structure of the Parliament. It is also not possible to provide adequate lighting in several areas of the building. According to sources, work on the new building will begin immediately after the monsoon session. The central government had earlier invited tenders for this. Last month, the government shortlisted three companies, namely, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Projects and Shapoorji Pallonji & Company.

This ambitious Central Vista project which had earlier come under criticism, especially amidst the pandemic and the subsequent economic slowdown, will cover the three-km stretch from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate in Lutyens' Delhi. Back in September, the revamp was announced envisaging a new triangular Parliament building, with seating capacity for 900 to 1,200 MPs, which is targeted to be constructed by August 2022 when the country will be celebrating its 75th Independence Day.

Even though several members of the Opposition have criticised the move, conservatives have long argued that this could change the historic nature of Lutyens’ Delhi.
