After receiving a lot of backlash from opposition, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now decided to name a Malad playground after the Queen of Jhansi, Rani Lakshmibai instead of Tipu Sultan.

On Tuesday, February 22, Mumbai Markets and Gardens committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) approved the proposal of naming a Malad playground after the freedom fighter.

Now, the proposal to name the ground after the queen of Jhansi will be tabled before the general body of the BMC for final approval in March first week for final approval. However, the move has again sparked controversy, with some corporators opposing the proposal.

Corporators from P-North (Malad) Sangita Sutar, Eknath Hundare, and Geeta Bhandari, deputy mayor Suhas Wadkar, and Sena leader Sudhakar Surve had sent letters to the committee chairperson with a request to name the ground after Rani Lakshmibai and be renamed as “Jhansi Chi Rani Lakhshmibai Udhyan”.

Last month, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had opposed naming the playground in Malad, which was inaugurated by Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh, after Tipu Sultan, also known as the Tiger of Mysuru.

The playground, located in Malwani, Malad, and popular as Tipu Sultan ground, was inaugurated by local MLA and Guardian Minister of Mumbai Aslam Shaikh on January 26.
