On Wednesday, June 29, in the last cabinet meeting headed by Shiv Sena head, Uddhav Thackeray, the decision was taken to approve the name change for two districts entailing Aurangabad and Osmanabad.

According to reports, Aurangabad's name has been altered to Sambhaji Nagar, while that of Osmanabad has been changed to Dharashiv. In addition to this, the Navi Mumbai Airport has also been changed to DB Patil International Airport.

The Shiv Sena has been attempting for a considerable time to alter the name of Aurangabad. Thus, this comes as one of the last decisions taken by Thackeray during his tenure as the CM

Following this decision, several political faces made statements in the media. Maharashtra Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat mentioned that there's no dispute in Congress about the name change of Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar.

Further, Imtiaz Jaleel, AIMIM MP from Aurangabad voiced that as the government began to lose power, they took this decision. Through the media, he told Thackeray that history cannot be altered even if names can be changed. He was quoted saying, "You're setting a great example of cheap politics. Only people can decide which name of Aurangabad will stay".

On the other hand, Abu Asim Azmi, Samajwadi Party, Maharashtra president, and MLA elucidated that be it the BJP or MVA who are walking on crutches, they want to sideline Muslims. Narratives have mentioned him saying, "I am sad that the ones we are supporting, who had said that they will now be secular after being with the wrong people for 30 years, are doing this on the last day".
