After Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to lay the foundation stone for the construction of Ram Mandir, Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik on Monday has demanded that party president Uddhav Thackeray be invited as the chief guest to the event in Ayodhya which is scheduled to happen on August 5.

Sarnaik’s demand comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to Ayodhya by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust which was formed on February 5 this year. The spokesperson of the trust said that they have suggested August 5 to begin the Ram Mandir construction.

In a letter to the Ram Janambhoomi Trust, Sarnaik highlighted that Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray was at the forefront during the Ram Mandir movement while stating that Uddhav Thackeray demanded the construction of Ram temple when no other leader raised the issue.

The “bhoomi pujan” in Ayodhya for Ram temple construction will be held amid the coronavirus outbreak in presence of those organisations and political parties which are somehow linked to the entire movement, the letter quoted in the media reports read.

Sarnaik, who represents Ovala-Majiwada assembly constituency in Thane, acknowledged that many have fought for the cause along with a long legal battle. “So, there is no question of claiming credit over the temple,” he said while adding that no politics should be played over the ceremony.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had visited Ayodhya before and after coming to power. His last visit to Ayodhya was to celebrate 100 days of being in power.

On Monday, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said that his party played an important role in paving the way for Ram Mandir construction. Raut said that his party will see if political social distancing is practised while inviting people while adding that the Shiv Sena President doesn’t need an invitation to visit Ayodhya.
