Three months ago, Maharashtra government had told its employees, living in Bandra East Government Colony for 15-20 years, to vacate their houses. The government had planned to redevelop the colony through a builder.

Reacting to this, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Friday slammed government’s move and said that he won’t allow the government to remove residents from the colony.

The residents of the colony met Raj Thackeray at his residence on Friday Morning. During the meet, residents appealed to the MNS chief to prevent them from moving out of the government colony. MNS Department President Sunil Harshe told Mumbai Live “Raj Thackeray has assured the residents that he will stand with them on this matter.”

Earlier, the residents and Government employees had requested the government to provide them with houses in the redeveloped structure, that it is going to be constructed at lower prices.

Of the 99 acres of land situated in the Government colony in Bandra East, the state government has decided to redevelop all of it. Thus, it has directed the residents to vacate their houses. The government has neglected the demand of residents and it should get affordable housing for its employees living in the colony, Thackeray said.

Earlier, the Public Works Department (PWD) had started sending notices to residents giving a reason to repair the buildings. According to the notice, residents were ordered to vacate houses permanently. However, the residents have refused to cooperate and are protesting against it.
