Don't break tradition: BJP leader Ashish Shelar urges Lalbaughcha Raja Mandal

The Mumbai’s famous Lalbaughcha Raja Mandal has been setting up pandal and installing Ganesh’s idol since 1934. However, it decided to break the tradition amid the coronavirus outbreak announcing that the celebrations will not be held this year.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashish Shelar has asked the Lalbaugcha Raja Ganeshotsav Mandal to rethink its decision to cancel the celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi 2020. Shelar urged the Mandal to not break the tradition. 

The Mumbai’s famous Lalbaughcha Raja Mandal has been setting up pandal and installing Ganesh’s idol since 1934. However, it decided to break the tradition amid the coronavirus outbreak announcing that the celebrations will not be held this year. This move has been praised by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. 

The Mandal has decided to donate ₹25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRD) for the fight against the coronavirus or COVID-19. It will also organise blood and plasma donation camps. The Maharashtra government recently Project Platina which will benefit the critical COVID-19 patients in the state. 

“In the centenary year of Lokmanya Tilak, the founder of public Ganeshotsav, the Ganeshotsav is witnessing obstacles..but ‘Bappa’ will find a way,” the BJP leader tweeted in Marathi. 

Shelar, former Maharashtra Minister, said that the 87-year-old tradition shouldn’t be broken as faith is the only hope for the common person. The Ganeshotsav can be celebrated while following the government’s guidelines. 

He further said that the decision taken by Lalbaugcha Raja Ganeshotsav Mandal to implement social activities is “commendable” while lauding Ganesh Galli and Chintamani mandals to continue the tradition by reducing the height of the idols. 

Shelar said in a series of tweet, “The (COVID-19) crisis in huge and faith is the only hope for the common man. Even online darshan of Lord Ganesha in times of crisis can bring relief to Ganesha devotees. In this country, faith cannot be weighed. So why should Ganesha devotees and Ganesha be separated?”
