After Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Nana Patole rejected the demand for a resolution to honour Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday slammed Shiv Sena for not taking a stand on the issue.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly and former Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis said that he never got to see Shiv Sena as “weak and helpless” to this extent.

“We are seeing Shiv Sena for the past 30 years. However, never ever got to see such a helpless and weak Shiv Sena. It was Hindu Hruday Samrat Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray who protested against Mani Shankar Iyer (for his remarks against Savarkar). Now, Shiv Sena is in power with the same party which calls Veer Savarkar a Maafi Veer and a rapist.” Devendra Fadnavis was quoted in media reports.

Moreover, Fadnavis expressed his disappointment with the Speaker’s decision to reject the resolution on Savarkar saying that it was “painful” and “shameful” day in the history of Maharashtra legislative assembly.

Fadnavis further said that Shiv Sena is willing to accept Savarkar’s insult to remain in power.

On the third day of the Maharashtra budget session, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded a resolution to honour Savarkar for his contribution to the Independence struggle. The resolution was moved by State BJP President Chandrakant Patil in the lower house.
