On Thursday, January 20, the BJP demanded that the tenders for building the new animal enclosure at Byculla zoo be scrapped after companies bid over INR 106 crore over the estimate, reports stated.

Based on accounts, last August, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had floated two tenders. One was for the building and ideation of eight animal enclosures for black jaguar, cheetah, white lion, chimpanzee, wallaby, ringtail lemur, lesser flamingo and mandrill monkey.

The other was for the construction of an area showcasing African savanna, aviary for Emu and exotic birds, enclosure for hippopotamus, installation of CCTV camera, landscaping public amenities and infrastructure works.

According to reports, the civic body recently received bids from a mere two companies. It has been reported that the estimated expenditure for the construction of animal enclosures in accordance with the two tenders was INR 91 crore and INR 94 crore, respectively.

The two companies, however, bid INR 146 crore and INR 145 crore respectively. Alleging cartelization and rigging of tenders, on Thursday, BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha demanded that the tenders be scrapped and threatened an agitation if the civic body did not do so.

Recently, the BMC christened a penguin chick and a tiger cub born in Mumbai's Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan also known as the Byculla Zoo.
