Sambhajiraje, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and the 13th direct descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray saying that the Maratha community should be allowed to express their displeasure over the Supreme Court’s decision.

“After the Supreme Court’s decision, the Maratha organisations have decided to protest. However, the police administration in Maharashtra is pressuring the agitators by issuing notices. If the government tried to suppress the agitation, it is likely to get more aggravated,” Sambhajiraje warned.

The Supreme Court recently stayed the implementation of Maratha reservation in government jobs and education. The apex court has referred the matter to a larger bench to check the validity of 16 per cent reservation quota for Maratha community.

In his letter, Sambhajiraje said that an atmosphere of discomfort among the Maratha community has been created after the Supreme Court order a stay on the Maratha reservation. Therefore, the Maratha outfits have decided to express their displeasure by protesting.

“But the police administration has started issuing notices to some protesters. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck,” the letter read.

Sambhajiraje, the Rajya Sabha MP, further said that it has been witnessed before during the silent march that the Maratha community is law-abiding. However, this is their time to fight for themselves and it is the right of every individual to fight for their rights in a democratic way, he added.

Meanwhile, he has written a letter to all the MPs explaining that the Maratha community is hurt due to the Supreme Court’s decision.
