The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra has criticised the Uddhav Thackeray government for withdrawing the general consent given to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe cases in the state.

BJP MLA Ram Kadam on Thursday slammed the decision taken by the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government and accused it of trying to hide facts. The Mumbai Police have launched an investigation into the TRP scam which involves Republic TV along with two other channels.

Questioning the decision, Kadam said that the Maharashtra government was afraid of truth to come out. The BJP leader also pointed out the Palghar lynching case and accused the MVA government of hiding facts.

“MVA’s censorship on CBI is unacceptable. We have seen what development Maharashtra government has done in Palghar Sadhu Lynching case. If CBI is censored in Maharashtra, Palghar like incidents will be buried more in state (sic),” Kadam tweeted.

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday blocked the Central Investigation of Bureau (CBI) from probing any case in Maharashtra without the prior consent of the state or higher judiciary.

The CBI, which is established by the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act of 1946, has a general consent by the state which was given on February 22, 1989. However, this has been withdrawn with immediate effect through an order issued by the home department of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra becomes the fourth state to withdraw the general consent given to the members of the Delhi Police Establishment. Rajasthan also withdrew the consent this year while West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh withdrew it in 2019.

This means that the CBI will have to take permission to probe any case which falls into the geographical jurisdiction of the state. The decision comes after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting with senior officials.
