The Mumbai Congress chief Bhai Jagtap on Monday, December 13, moved the Bombay High Court (HC) against the local civic body and police for not giving permission to hold a rally.

Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections next year, the Congress seeks permission for a rally on December 28, which also marks the 137th Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress Party, at Shivaji Park, in Mumbai. Rahul Gandhi will be addressing the rally.

The plea filed through advocate Pradeep Thorat states that the Congress party had applied for permission to hold the rally. However, state government has not granted permission for the rally, yet.

According to a PTI report, Jagtap said an application was submitted to the state government in October 2021, seeking permission to hold the rally where Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi have been invited to address the gathering. However, till date no decision has been taken on the application, the petition said.

State unit president Bhai Jagtap, who filed the application, sought the court’s direction to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government on the matter.

The Congress is a constituent of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government in the state. Therefore, it has come as a surprise that permission was not granted to hold the rally. However, the Congress has decided to go solo in the BMC Elections to be held in 2022.

Meanwhile, amid concerns of Omicron cases in the state and the city, Deputy chief minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar had said if cases of the new variant continued to rise, the government would have to think about allowing the upcoming rally.
