Standing Committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently passed a proposal worth ₹32 crores to hire private guards without discussion. The tender was put at halt by BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal due to a pending review.

Despite BMC Commissioner’s order to withdraw the plan, the standing committee cleared the proposal to hire private guards without any discussion. The opposition parties including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) raised strong objections to the same.

The standing committee is headed by Shiv Sena while Congress sits in the Opposition seat. Yashwant Jadhav, standing committee’s chairman, said that he didn’t get any request about the withdrawal of the proposal. He asserted that there was no "wrongdoing".

According to a report published in Mumbai Mirror, the BMC chief had earlier ordered that the 32-crore proposal to hire private security guards should be withdrawn amid the allegations that the civic body has rigged the tenders.

Earlier, the BJP had alleged that the tender process was favouring Eagle Security and Personal Service - the only bidder. The opposition further raised questions of funding with regards to their salaries and accused that the BMC was carrying out a rigged tender process.

Reacting to this, SP MLA Rais Shaikh said that this is an attempt by Shiv Sena to silence the administration and the opposition. Meanwhile, Ravi Raja - Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the BMC - informed that there was a pressure to clear the tender from Jadhav himself.

Vinod Mishra, BJP’s group leader in the BMC, said that the clearance to the proposal was illegal as the civic body chief had ordered to withdraw it.
