Hours after Supreme Court’s verdict on the Maratha reservation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday, May 5, addressed the state terming it as 'disappointing'.

Besides, Thackeray also spoke on the challenges that Maharashtra faces due to the coronavirus pandemic and termed that it has spiralled out of control. In his address, the CM mentioned that the state has started preparing for the third wave.

His statement comes after the principal scientific advisor to the central government said a third wave of the coronavirus is inevitable.

"We have started preparations for the third wave. We have directed to increase oxygen production by 3,000 metric tonnes from the current 1,200 metric tonnes. We have also started 'Mission Oxygen' so that there is no shortage of medical oxygen in the state."

According to reports, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state due to the second and deadlier wave of COVID-19 since February.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister also said that several districts are witnessing a decline in COVID-19 cases while some districts are seeing an increase. "We're keeping a close tab on it," he added.

CM Thackeray also spoke about the acute shortage of medical oxygen for COVID-infected patients in Maharashtra amid the second wave of the pandemic. The state government has urged the Centre to enhance the present allocation of LMO to the state by 200 metric tonnes daily.

Talking on SC’s verdict, he mentioned: “It was clear in today's verdict that a decision on Maratha Reservation can be taken only by the Center and the President." He also said that the longstanding demand for reservation for Marathas amplifies across the state.

"So, I request PM Modi and President Kovind to intervene in the matter. As the Center turned SC verdicts in Shah Bano Case and ST/SC Atrocity Act, Center should do the same for it," he added.
