Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday.

This meet comes amid the tension in Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra over the implementation of the National Population Register (NPR) process and the Elgar Parisad-Bhima Koregaon case.

Shiv Sena’s ideologically opposite alliance partners – Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – have strongly opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and NPR.

Earlier, NCP chief Sharad Pawar has called the CAA, NRC, NPR issue as “divisive” while Congress has maintained that NPR is “NCP is disguise”.

However, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday announced that he will not block the implementation of the NPR process stating that there shouldn’t be any problem with the same in Maharashtra.

CAA and NRC both are different and NPR is different. No one has to worry if CAA gets implemented. NRC is not there and will not be implemented in the state,” Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said.

“We will convince Shiv Sena,” Sharad Pawar said while stating that they will discuss the matter with Uddhav Thackeray’s party.

Uddhav Thackeray’s meeting with Sonia Gandhi might touch upon the recent disagreement in the MVA government over the issue of CAA, NRC and NPR.

Sharad Pawar played a key role in the formation of the three-party alliance government in Maharashtra. It was speculated that Pawar was the important link between Uddhav Thackeray and Sonia Gandhi.
