Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday played down the decision of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to implement the National Population Register (NPR) in Maharashtra.

“We will convince Shiv Sena,” Sharad Pawar said while addressing the media in Mumbai.

Earlier, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in Sindhudurg said that he will not block the implementation of NPR while reiterating his anti-NRC stand.

“NPR happens every ten years and I don’t find that anyone will be affected by it. NPR is a census,” CM Thackeray said.

CM Thackeray informed that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process will not be implemented in Maharashtra as it will not only affect Hindus or Muslims but Adivasis too.

“CAA and NRC both are different and NPR is different. No one has to worry if CAA gets implemented. NRC is not there and will not be implemented in the state,” the Chief Minister said while addressing the media in Sindhudurg.

Reacting to this, Sharad Pawar said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) may not agree with every decision and termed the views of CM Uddhav Thackeray on the CAA-NRC-NPR issue as “personal”.

“NCP has its own view on the issue which is against the CAA, NRC and NPR. However, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has the right to have his view on the issue. In a coalition, we can’t promise that everyone will agree to the same thing but we will try to convince them,” Sharad Pawar said.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar played a key role in bringing together the ideologically different parties to form the government in Maharashtra. The unusual alliance in Maharashtra between NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena happened after Pawar intervened.
