Ahead of 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, Congress' state unit sent a list of 44.61 lakh fake voters to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora while demanding the removal of these names. 

Responding to the issue, the CEC said that 2.16 lakh fake voters have been removed so far and the process to remove the remaining names is underway. 

However, Congress expressed their disappointment saying that in seven months only 2.16 lakh names have removed. 

We presented a list of 44.61 lakh voters who were largely duplicates of the list presented on February 25, 2019. However, even after seven months, the EC has removed only 2.16 lakh names which are fake. This is highly objectionable. Is the election commission trying to help the BJP win this election?"

The Election Commission has maintained that they constituted an inquiry in this matter and have sent a summary of the investigation to Congress. The EC further said that if Congress has any objection, they should present it in writing.
