After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its manifesto for Bihar assembly elections promising free COVID-19 vaccines, Maharashtra Congress President Balasaheb Thorat slammed the BJP for politicising the coronavirus vaccine. He said that it was the responsibility of the centre to provide free vaccines to all states.

“Elections will be held in Bihar so the BJP has promised free vaccines to people there. But what about Maharashtra and other states?” Thorat asked.

On Thursday, BJP released its manifesto for the Bihar assembly elections which are scheduled to be held in three-phases starting October 28. During her speech, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman promised that people in Bihar will get free COVID-19 vaccine once it is cleared by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Many opposition parties including Shiv Sena and Congress have raised objection to this poll promise made by the BJP in Bihar. Reacting to this, Thorat said that the coronavirus vaccine is not yet available and it should be a right of every Indian to get a free vaccine.

“Whenever there are elections, BJP makes false promises. In the last assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a package of ₹1.25 lakh crore for Bihar. What happened to that package? People of Bihar must ask this question,” Thorat added.

Thorat, Maharashtra Revenue Minister, also took a dig at senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis asking when will Maharashtra get free COVID-19 vaccine. Fadnavis has been appointed as the election in-charge for Bihar.

Meanwhile, labelling it as “cruel”, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that BJP’s poll promise to provide free vaccines in Bihar was not right and such promises damage the image of PM Modi.
