Even days after senior Congress leaders admitted to issues within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), they have not been able to meet Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to discuss the same and clear the air.

The Congress leaders over the last week have met multiple times to discuss the issues bothering them. The issues pertain to Congress ministers not being taken into confidence in the decision-making process along with the distribution of legislative council seats and troubles with the bureaucracy.

Maharashtra Congress President Balasaheb Thorat and Ashok Chavan were scheduled to meet Thackeray on Monday. However, the meeting was pushed after the news of Thackeray’s father-in-laws' demise. The senior Congress leaders were not able to meet the Chief Minister on Tuesday as well.

The 12 seats of Maharashtra Legislative Council got vacant this month. Of the 78 seats in the MLC, 12 seats are nominated by the governor. During the formation of MVA, it was decided that the three-party alliance (Shiv Sena, Congress, Nationalist Congress Party) will get four seats each.

However, it has been learned that the Sena has been demanding five seats and wants Congress to have only three. The internal sources have informed that Congress is in no mood to sacrifice its seat as they had done it before during the MLC polls which were held unopposed.

With Congress leaders openly expressing displeasure over ‘issues’ in the ruling MVA, Shiv Sena had compared its ally with an old cot who yawps now and then. In an editorial published in ‘Saamana’, Sena attacked the Congress leadership in Maharashtra and said that these heavyweights should remember that Thackeray was elected as the Chief Minister and his decision is final in all matters.

It said that even Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and his leaders are not squeaking like Congress. The editorial further stated that the seats must be divided on the basis of the coalition partners’ strength in the Legislative Assembly. The Sena has 64 members, including eight independents, while the NCP and Congress have 54 and 44 members.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Nirupam slammed the Sena for its “arrogance” and said that the regional party should not forget that it was in power because of Congress’ support. Congress ministers are asking the Chief Minister to meet them but he is busy meeting everyone but them, he said.
