Amid the constant hike in Petrol and Diesel prices, Congress has slammed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the same. Maharashtra Congress President Ashok Chavan said that before coming to power, the BJP promised to reduce the prices of petrol and diesel but they are constantly increasing.

Chavan said that both the central and state government are charging more taxes on petrol due to which there is a hike in the petrol price and the commoners are spending a huge amount on the same. Mumbaikars are the ones who are paying the highest for the petrol with the price set at more than 84 rupees. He further added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis promised to reduce inflation before they came to power.

Earlier in May 2014, after Modi government came into power, international crude oil prices have fallen from $108 per barrel to $75.

Ashok Chavan says that both the Central and the State Government are charging more taxes on the petrol, which is causing an increase in the price of petrol and the public money is being looted by the government. The most expensive petrol in the country is currently getting in Mumbai. Modi and Fadnavis promised people to vote and reduce inflation. But they proved this also. On May 16, 2014, after the arrival of Narendra Modi's government, international crude oil prices have fallen from $ 108 a barrel to $ 75 a barrel.

Considering the constant hike in petrol prices, more than 50 percent tax is taken by the state and central government for various reasons and it has a direct impact on the general public. Moreover, the government wants to cover petrol and diesel prices under Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Ashok Chavan blamed the government for keeping the petrol prices stable during the Karnataka Elections but as soon as the political chaos in the state was over, the petrol prices went up.
