Maharashtra government plans to extend lockdown in Mumbai, Pune and other red zones till May 31

The Maharashtra government has extended the lockdown in red zones including Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune, Malegaon, Aurangabad and Solapur until May 31. However, there has been no official announcement regarding lockdown extension yet. 

The centre is yet to issue guidelines regarding the same before the third phase of lockdown ends on May 17. It was learnt that the Maharashtra government will implement the guidelines announced by the centre in rest of the state. 

On Thursday, in a meeting with cabinet members, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray discussed extending the lockdown in cities like Mumbai, Pune till May 31. Along with this, Thackeray asked the state administration to submit a report on activities which can be allowed outside containment zones in cities that come under the red zone. 

The meeting chaired by Uddhav Thackeray aimed to discuss the way ahead after the lockdown 3.0 ends which is on May 17, 2020. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, followed by Water Resource Minister Jayant Patil, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat and other cabinet members were present at the meeting at Old Mayor bungalow in Dadar. 

Recently, the Chief Minister asked the district officials district authorities to come up with an exit strategy of their respective areas from the national lockdown and submit the same by May 15.

On Monday, during his interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uddhav Thackeray suggested that more relaxations in the lockdown should be announced rather than lifting it all together while pointing out the studies show that COVID-19 cases are likely to peak in June or July. 

As of May 14, Maharashtra reported 27,524 COVID-19 cases while the death toll of the state has reached 1,019. In Mumbai alone, the number of cases has risen to 16,768. On Thursday, Mumbai registered 998 fresh COVID-19 cases while the MMR region witnessed 46 deaths in one day.
