Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday, May 25, declared that the state government give compensation to people who suffered losses due to cyclone Tauktae, which hit the coastal districts last week.

He also mentioned that the compensation will be on the lines of the relief package prepared for the victims of the cyclone 'Nisarga' that had hit the coastal districts last June.

On May 21, the CM had visited the affected areas in the coastal Konkan to take stock of the situation. During his tour, he had stated that no genuine victims will be left out.

Meanwhile, soon after Thackeray’s visit, the BJP Opposition Leader and former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis criticised the CM and said that people affected due to Nisarga cyclone last year are yet to receive financial assistance. This government is making hollow promises instead of taking firm steps.

He also lashed out at the MVA government for not taking preventive measures despite a warning of the cyclone.

Fadnavis also pointed out that his tour was of merely three hours. He also said that the state government must now monitor the damage assessment underway to ensure it is comprehensive.

Cyclone Tauktae caused damage to horticulture, houses and government buildings and also claimed 20 lives.
