Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Chandrakant Patil on Wednesday took a dig at the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government and said that it did not look good to pressurise the state Governor amid the coronavirus crisis.

The BJP is not opposed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray being appointed as the member of the legislative council but he should have contested the election earlier to become an MLC, Chandrakant Patil said.

Patil’s remarks come in the backdrop of the decision taken by Maharashtra cabinet recommending Uddhav Thackeray’s name to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari for the former’s appointment as an MLC from the governor’s quota.

“We are not against Uddhav Thackeray getting nominated to the Upper house of the Maharashtra legislature via governor’s quota. Thackeray has enough time till May 27. He can wait till then,” Maharashtra BJP President Chandrakant Patil said while adding that it did not look good to pressurise the governor amid the coronavirus crisis to nominate Thackeray as an MLC.

The Maharashtra Governor is likely to take a call on the decision to nominate Uddhav Thackeray. However, this has not happened yet. The governor has two seats in his quota and the cabinet recommended Thackeray’s name to avoid a constitutional crisis.

Earlier, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut expressed confidence that his party chief Uddhav Thackeray will remain the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Raut, however, questioned that what was stopping Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to nominate Thackeray as Minister of Legislative Council (MLC) from governor’s quota?

On the possibility of ‘Operation Lotus’, Raut dared those trying to dethrone the Uddhav Thackeray government that they should desist from doing so while stating that neither Delhi or Raj Bhavan can stop Thackeray from staying at Chief Minister post even after the deadline.

Uddhav Thackeray took oath as Maharashtra Chief Minister on November 28, 2019, and is not the member of either house - legislative assembly or council. According to the Indian constitution, within six months of taking the oath, any minister is supposed to get elected in either state legislative assembly or council.

The deadline for Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to get elected to the state legislature is May 27.
