Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Chandrakant Patil on Tuesday demanded the resignation of state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh over his “failure” to avoid Palghar mob lynching incident.

Patil also demanded an independent inquiry into the matter. “The law and order situation in Maharashtra has declined and there are several incidents which show this. Anil Deshmukh should be thrown out of the state cabinet and the Palghar incident should be investigated independently,” the senior BJP leader said.

Chandrakant Patil further pointed out that the alleged incident of assault on Anant Karmuse at a minister’s bungalow followed up by the crowd gathering in Bandra and the Palghar lynching incident shows that the Home Minister has lost control.

This comes after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had appealed the opposition to not play politics amid the coronavirus outbreak. Moreover, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said that levelling allegations and calling for resignations of state ministers at the time of the coronavirus outbreak should be avoided.

Attacking the MVA government, Patil said that it took Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s call for Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to speak on the Palghar incident even though he would have been informed about the issue on the next day it happened.

“The state has witnessed several criminal incidents. A person was beaten up at a minister’s bungalow. In another case, a senior IPS officer issued a letter to the family of an accused in financial fraud,” Patil said.

The BJP has demanded that the housing minister Jitendra Awhad and home minister Anil Deshmukh should be removed from the cabinet.

Recently, the three men who were killed by an angry mob in Gadchinchale village in Palghar district of Maharashtra have been identified as Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70) and Nilesh Telgane (35). They were travelling towards Surat to attend the funeral of common acquaintance and were killed by the mob on suspicion that they were child-kidnappers and organ harvesters.
