On Thursday, May 19, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar remarked that the state government will approach the Supreme Court (SC) after the committee formed to collect empirical data for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota gives its report to the government next month, reported the news agency, PTI.
According to the report, on Wednesday, May 18, the SC permitted the Madhya Pradesh (MP) government to conduct local body polls with the OBC quota. Pawar in a press conference elaborated on how the state government has commenced taking steps to assess if the MP decision could be implemented in Maharashtra too.
Pawar reassured the citizens that the MVA government would undertake the needed efforts till the last moment to ensure that the OBC community gets representation in the upcoming local body polls in Maharashtra.
He added that the state government will not let the aggregate reservation cross the 50 per cent threshold while enforcing the OBC quota. The Deputy Chief Minister brought to light that the government has commenced work in that direction by interacting with the concerned officials, who he say are positive.
Pawar uttered that the state government has also studied the data submitted by the MP government to the SC. Additionally, he said that the ward structuring was done under the leadership of the State Election Commission (SEC). Moreover, the recommendations and objections before the panel were also sought prior to making a decision.
On the other hand, reports were also doing the rounds that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray could discuss the OBC reservation issue with his MP counterpart.
