Global Teacher Prize winner Ranjitsinh Disale tests positive for coronavirus

After winning the prestigious award, Ranjitsinh Disale had met the CM, Deputy CM, Governor and other ministers from the government of Maharashtra. As per reports, all the officials who came in contact with him have been asked to get tested for COVID-19

'Global Teacher Prize' winner for 2020, Ranjitsinh Disale, on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, informed that he has tested positive for Coronavirus. Disale stated that he had taken the COVID-19 test after developing some symptoms, and since it has resulted positive, he has informed everyone who he has met, to get tested as per protocols. 

Disale was recently felicitated with the prestigious prize and his efforts were lauded by several personalities in the state. CM Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and several other shared congratulatory messages and appreciated the steps he has taken to improve the quality of education for the students in India.

Reports state that Disale recently visited CM Uddhav Thackeray and was felicitated at his Varsha residence. He was presented with a shawl, coconut and insignia. Present at the event were Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, Transport Minister Adv. Anil Parab, Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray were present. Earlier, Praveen Darekar, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council among others.

Post this, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Rural Development Minister Hasan Mushrif and School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad also met Disale and felicitated him. He visited Krishnakunj residence and met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray.

These meetings have raised concerns and as a result, everyone who came in contact with them will now have to undergo a COVID-19 test.

Ranjitsinh Disale is a teacher at Paritewadi Zilla Parishad School in Solapur. He was announced as the winner of the 'Global Teacher Prize' 2020 and felicitated with a cash prize of INR 7 crore by UNESCO and the London-based Varkey Foundation.

The official announcement was made by well-known actor Stephen Fry at a ceremony held at the Natural History Museum in London. With this, Disale became the first Indian teacher to receive such an award and was selected out of the 12,000 nominations received from over 140 countries around the world. Disale's efforts were recognised for his work done in the field of education whereby he has implemented the QR coded books to improve knowledge-based learning among students in India.

Post the announcement, Disale made a landmark revelation of sharing 50 per cent of the prize money with other nine finalists, as an appreciation for the work they have done in the field of education. This announcement also marks the first time a winner of the Global Teacher Prize has shared his award with other finalists.
