On Friday, February 19, the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is being celebrated in the state in order to pay tribute to the Maratha warrior king.

Shiv Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the iconic 17th-century ruler, is celebrated with great fervour in Maharashtra. In view of the occasion, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray along with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar visited Fort Shivneri and paid floral tributes. Moreover, the CM paid his respects before the statues of Rajmata Jijabai Bhosale and a young Shivaji erected at the fort, and then joined a group of women singing traditional lullabies and gently rocking a cradle with a doll symbolizing an infant Shivaji.

Besides CM Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray, nominated BJP Rajya Sabha MP Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje, the 13th direct descendent of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, actor-MP Amol Kolhe, local legislators Arun Benke, Vinayak Mete, Zilla Parishad President Nirmala Pansare along with several other ministers from different parties and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

With the surge in cases of coronavirus, this year, the state government has appealed to the people to pay homage from their homes. Moreover, the state has banned processions and cultural-religious programs. However, a gathering of around 100 people has been permitted on the day.

According to reports, on Thursday, February 18, the guideline issued by the home department had restricted the gathering to 10 people amidst the pandemic, however, by evening it was increased to 100 people after the opposition slammed the state government for its decision.
