The much-awaited Gujarat elections ended with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) as a winner. However, the win was not easy as three candidates made it difficult for the party to win the race. These three candidates are Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakor, and Jignesh Mevani. Out of these three, Jignesh Mevani, who was contesting from Banaskantha district’s Vadgam, defeated BJP’s candidate Vijay Kumar Harkabhai by 18,150 votes.

Jignesh has a Mumbai connection

Jignesh who defeated the BJP candidate who is known for fighting for Dalits had worked as a journalist in Mumbai for three years, said his close aide Amit Chawda in an interview with Mumbai Live.

Other Dalit leaders backed him

When Mevani was campaigning prior to the elections, he received support from other Dalit leaders as well. One of the leaders was Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh leader Prakash Ambedkar and Republican Sena leader Anandraj Ambedkar who urged voters of Vadgam to vote for Mevani. Mevani came into limelight when he started a protest with a name ‘Azadi Kuch’ asking Dalits not to do derogatory work. This helped all Dalits to believe in Mevani and helped him to win, according to Prakash Ambedkar.

Worked for a magazine

For a few years, Mevani resided in Mumbai as a paying guest in Borivali along with a few friends. Everyone knows that he is a lawyer but few knew that he also worked as a journalist. Chawda said that Mevani has also worked for Abhiyaan magazine (Gujarati) which is a famous one in Gujarat. He worked as a journalist between 2006 and 2008 and it is also speculated that he completed his education at Bhavan’s College.
