Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Monday evening met Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi at the latter’s residence in Delhi to discuss the ongoing political turmoil in Maharashtra.

However, in a surprise twist, Pawar stated that he didn’t discuss government formation during his 45-minute-long meeting with Sonia Gandhi.

I had a meeting with the Congress President and Ak Antony was present there. We discussed the situation and numbers. I just briefed her about the political situation in Maharashtra. We did not discuss other issues,” said Pawar while talking to the media in Delhi.

Pawar’s meeting comes a day after NCP core committee in Pune decided that the President’s rule should end and an alternative government should be formed.

Pawar was in Delhi for the first day of the winter session of Parliament and met Sonia Gandhi in the evening. The meeting between the two-party supremos had been speculated as crucial for government formation in Maharashtra.

However, Pawar clearly said that he did not discuss the issue of a possible alliance with Shiv Sena in his meeting with Sonia Gandhi.

Earlier on Sunday, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut had claimed that his party has the support of 170 MLAs. Reacting to this, Pawar on Monday said that he is not aware of the figure.

I don’t know about this 170 figure. You should have asked them (Shiv Sena),” said Pawar during the media interaction.

Keeping his card close, the NCP supremo said that they will keep an eye on the situation in Maharashtra. Congress and NCP leaders will hold further talks on the future course of action, added Pawar.

The senior NCP chief further added that they will have to take smaller allies like Samajwadi Party, Peasants and Workers Party in confidence also.
