The tension between Maharashtra government and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has developed yet again but this time the tussle is linked to the issue of reopening temples in the state.

On Monday, Koshyari wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray questioning the government’s decision to keep the places of worship closed. The Governor said that the state government has extended the ban on opening places of worship despite demands to restart them.

“It is ironical that while the state government has permitted the opening of bars, restaurants and beaches, on the other hand, our gods and goddesses have been condemned to stay in the lockdown,” Koshyari wrote.

The Governor went on to question Thackeray’s commitment to Hindutva saying if he had turned ‘secular’. In his letter, Koshyari said that Thackeray has been a strong votary of Hindutva and visited Ayodhya after taking charge as the Chief Minister.

“I wonder if you are recovering any divine premonition to keep postponing the reopening of the places of worship time and again or have you suddenly turned ‘secular’ yourselves, the term you hated?” the letter read.

Thackeray irked

Responding to Koshyari’s letter, Thackeray on Tuesday said that he doesn’t need any lessons or certificate in Hindutva from him. He said that looking after the health and welfare of the citizens was his government’s primary duty and opening temples would not be feasible amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

“I appreciate the mention of Hindutva but my Hindutva doesn’t allow me to welcome a person in my home who described Mumbai as Pakistan Occupied Kashmir,” Thackeray said while referring to Governor’s meeting with Actress Kangana Ranaut earlier.

Replying to Koshyari’s political taunt, Thackeray said that secularism is the core of the oath taken by the Governor.

“Do you mean that opening religious places is Hindutva and not doing it means secular? Do you not believe that secularism is the core aspect of the oath you took as a Governor?” Thackeray responded.
