The Maharashtra Cabinet, on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, decided to change the caste-based names of the urban and rural areas in the state. The decision was taken after a thorough consideration at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

As per reports, suggestions of changing names of places like Mahar-wada, Bouddh-wada, Mang-wada, Dhor-vasti, Brahman-wada, Mali-galli was suggested by the officials. These settlements will now be given names like Samata Nagar, Bhim Nagar, Jyoti Nagar, Shahu Nagar, Kranti Nagar and others.

Sharing more information regarding the decision, Maharashtra State Social Justice Minister, Dhananjay Munde stated that no locality should be recognised and named after a specific, and a discussion regarding the matter was held with Sharad Pawar and other leaders, who also thought this to be inappropriate. Keeping the same in mind, the state has decided to escalate the process and change the names. He added that the decision was taken in favour as this matter was not conducive to a progressive state like Maharashtra, and the ministers decided to change the names in order to create social harmony and increase national unity among the citizens.

The final decision regarding the names will be taken by both the Urban and the Rural Development Departments. Earlier, the name of Dalit Vasti Sudhar Yojana was also changed. Furthermore, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Dalit Mitra Award has been renamed as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Samaj Bhushan Award. As per the President's order, instead of the word 'Dalit,' officials had to use ' Scheduled Caste and Navboudhha Colony Development scheme' across all government transactions, cases, certificates, and documents.
