The Maharashtra government is planning to reduce the number of official vehicles used by cabinet ministers and senior officials.

Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik has been asked to prepare a report on the current fleet of government vehicles, their usage, and related expenses. The move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to states to adopt austerity measures and reduce fuel consumption in view of the West Asia crisis and its possible impact on fuel supplies and prices.

Officials believe that cutting down unnecessary government vehicles can help reduce fuel consumption, lower maintenance costs, and promote more efficient use of public resources. The Maharashtra government is also considering stricter rules for vehicle allocation and official travel as part of broader energy-saving measures.

The discussion comes amid increasing focus on reducing government expenditure and promoting responsible use of public funds in Maharashtra.
