On Tuesday, February 1, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari provided his assent to a Bill that offers up to 27 per cent reservation to Other Backward Classes (OBC) group in rural bodies in Maharashtra, reports stated.

Earlier on Monday, January 31, Koshyari had returned the bill to the state rural development department stating that the issue is sub-judice. However, he cleared it after the Maharashtra government convinced him of its legal importance, cited accounts.

Based on reports, the Maharashtra government hopes that the OBC reservation bill in the state will be brought back in force through the newly enacted law provided the Supreme Court accords its approval during the hearing on February 8.

Several narratives have quoted NCP Minister Chhagan Bhujbal stating that before the Supreme Court hearing on February 8, they are anticipating an interim report from the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission (MSBCC).

These, he said, will be put before the apex court, Bhujbal added that the court will be explained that on average the OBC community will get 20 per cent reservation since the new laws will differ district wise.

News agency ANI, quoted Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar elaborating on how the OBC reservation bill was signed by the Governor, adding that the bill was unanimously passed by everyone and how they are happy with the said decision.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had struck the legal provision that accorded 27 per cent political reservation since it exceeded that 50 per cent cap. In the aftermath of this, the state promulgated an ordinance to amend two legislations, ensuring 27 per cent reservation for the OBC candidates.
