Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Nana Patole on Thursday informed that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of both the houses of the state legislature is expected to meet next week to have a discussion on holding the monsoon session amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature is scheduled to begin on August 3. It was earlier scheduled to start on June 22 but was postponed due to the imposition of lockdown in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to PTI, Patole informed that nearly 1,500 people including legislators and other staff are present at a time in the Vidhan Bhavan (legislature) when the session is in progress and the total staff strength of the Vidhan Bhavan is 750.

The speaker said that the prevailing situation (COVID-19 outbreak) would be reviewed at the BAC meeting and views of the government and opposition will be sought on holding the monsoon session.

Earlier in March, the budget session of the Maharashtra Legislature was cut short by almost a week after the coronavirus outbreak in the state.

Recently, the Maharashtra Legislature secretariat issued an order increasing the staff attendance to 50 per cent. Earlier, the attendance was 15 per cent owing to the coronavirus outbreak and the lockdown imposition.

Now, the staff has been asked to join work ahead of the monsoon session of Maharashtra legislature which is scheduled to begin on August 3.
