Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday has instructed all the departments to use Marathi as the official language in government office work. The Maharashtra government issued a notification which made the use of Marathi for written communication between departments mandatory.

The notification issued by the Maharashtra government states that failure to use Marathi as part of any government work will result in cancellation of the annual increment of the officials. Negative remarks will also be made in their confidential service book, it said.

The notice read that there have been many complaints raised by people against the release of official documents and orders in English. This has caused a communication gap between the government and common people, it noted.

The government officers are giving priority to English for internal communication despite several reminders and orders making Marathi a compulsory language, the circular said.

“It has been noted that several websites are only in English. Disciplinary actions will be taken against those officers who fail to comply to use of Marathi in government work,” the order signed by Rajshree Bapat said. He is the desk officer at the Marathi language department.

The use of Marathi language will help increase awareness among common people and they would be able to understand the government notifications issued by various departments including disaster management. The commoners will also be able to take the benefit from the government schemes, the circular read.

The departments have been instructed to change the website from English to Marathi ordering the use Marathi in official correspondence and communication. The local administration such as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also been asked to communicate notifications in Marathi.

Earlier, the Maharashtra government made Marathi a compulsory subject in all schools including those affiliated with CBSE and ICSE till 10th standard. The Maharashtra Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Marathi Language in Schools Bill, 2020, has a provision for a penalty in case of non-compliance by the schools.
