After Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) announced to convert educational institutes including schools into COVID-19 care centres, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) warned the civic body in Thane against doing so.

The Raj Thackeray-led MNS has opposed the decision taken by the TMC to take over educational institutes including colleges and schools and use it as Corona Care Centres (CCCs).

Avinash Jadhav, MNS chief for Thane and Palghar, on Thursday said that once the schools reopen the children studying there will be scared to attend the classes in a room which has been used to house coronavirus patients.

Jadhav said that this would cause mental agony to students and it should be avoided. TMC is taking over schools and colleges when a number of marriage halls and hospitals are available in the city, he said.

In a video message, Jadhav warned of a serious agitation against the TMC if the civic body takes over the educational institute to convert them into CCCs. He said that if this happens, the party will launch a serious agitation along with the parents of the students.

The government has reserved 80 per cent of the beds in a private hospital which can be taken over by the corporation, the MNS leader said.

The TMC was taking over educational institutes to convert them into CCCs to deal with the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Thane. However, many have objected to this move by the corporation and have launched an online petition against it.

Maharashtra has been the worst-hit state due to the coronavirus outbreak. Since its first case on March 9, the number of COVID-19 cases in the state has reached 97,648 nearing the one lakh-mark. The death toll in Maharashtra has touched 3,590.

In Mumbai alone, the number of COVID-19 cases have risen to 54,085 and has reported 1,954 deaths. On Thursday, the financial capital reported 97 deaths. In Thane, the number of cases has also risen to 1,496.
