Congress leader Nana Patole might become the new party chief in Maharashtra and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan may get appointed as the speaker of Maharashtra legislative assembly.

In a major revamp, the Congress leadership may replace Balasaheb Thorat, current party president in Maharashtra, with Nana Patole who is the assembly speaker. According to sources, Chavan will replace Patole as the assembly speaker.

Thorat is the Revenue Minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government and the legislature party leader. Along with this, Thorat is also a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC).

Nana Patole is currently in Delhi to attend a meeting with Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla and to meet Congress’ top leadership in the national capital. The sources inform that Patole is ready to take up the responsibility of the party’s unit in Maharashtra.

Earlier, Congress intended to appointed Chavan at the post of the assembly speaker. However, after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), an alliance partner in the MVA objected his name was dropped. Moreover, Chavan couldn’t enter the MVA cabinet as well due to the limited departments given to Congress.

Patole was unanimously elected as the speaker in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in December last year and enjoys a good rapport with the top leadership of Congress. Patole was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member earlier from Bhandara-Gondia.

While in BJP, he had voiced out against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the agrarian crisis in the Vidarbha region. Later, he quit BJP and joined hands with Congress to successfully contest the 2019 assembly polls.

This possible change in the Congress’ leadership in Maharashtra comes at a time when the BJP has launched “Maharashtra Bachao” Andolan against the Shiv Sena-led MVA government over its handling of COVID-19 crisis.
