Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Thursday announced measures to reduce the expenses of Raj Bhavan in the wake of the coronavirus crisis in the state. The austerity measures announced by the Governor aim to make more resources available for COVID-19 relief measures.

In a series of measures, the Governor has instructed Raj Bhavan to cancel reception organised on the Independence Day in Pune and put a halt to new recruitments until further orders which will reduce the expenses.

Moreover, the Raj Bhavan has been instructed to stop any new major construction or repairing work at the Governor’s residence. In a statement, Governor Koshyari said that only ongoing works will be continued and completed.

Any new proposal for the purchase of new cars for Raj Bhavan has also been deferred in order to cut expenses amid the coronavirus outbreak. Along with this, the practice of offering gifts to VVIPS will also be discontinued until further order.

“The practice of welcoming VIP visitors with bouquets will be discontinued. Guesthouse rooms in Raj Bhavan should not be decorated with vases and flower-pots. Meetings and interactions with Vice-Chancellors and various officers to be conducted via video conference to avoid any expense on travels,” the statement read.

These measures will save nearly 10-15 per cent of the budget of Raj Bhavan in the current financial year. To assist in the fight against COVID-19, Governor Koshyari has already contributed one month of his salary and has pledged 30 per cent of his salary to PM-CARES fund for one year.

These austerity measures will be a small but significant contribution to save resources that can be used to help the people in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, the statement read.
