The Women Wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday sent onions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to register their protest against the central government’s decision to ban onion export.

Rupali Chakankar, NCP Women’s Wing President, said that women workers from all 36 districts in Maharashtra sent the onions to PM Modi and Governor Koshyari. Parcels of five kilograms of onions each were sent to these two leaders.

“We have dispatched the onion consignments by Indian post from Pune. In other districts, out members handed the onions to collectors or other officials to be forwarded to PM Modi and Governor Koshyari,” IANS quoted Chakankar as saying.

The NCP and Congress have been protesting the centre’s “sudden decision to ban onion export”. Earlier, NCP chief Sharad Pawar met Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to apprise him about the plight of onion growers.

“The central government has abruptly announced a ban on onion exports. This has led to strong reactions from the onion growing belt in Maharashtra and therefore, the representatives of various political parties contacted and requested me to convey their demands to Central Government,” the NCP chief said.

An-all party delegation from Maharashtra will meet the Prime Minister on Tuesday to discuss various issues including the ban on onion export and to seek help for the cooperative sugar mills.

Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Dada Bhuse earlier said that a state government delegation led by Pawar will meet Union Ministers in Delhi to demand the withdrawal of onion export ban.

Meanwhile, Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the Narendra Modi cabinet to protest the farm bills. Her resignation has come as a huge blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in centre amid the farmers’ unrest in Punjab and Haryana.
