Kicking off its preparations for the upcoming local bodies elections, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had called a meeting on Wednesday, December 23, of party cadres, leaders and candidates who had lost the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections last year.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that the party is looking for a long-term alliance with its ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partner Shiv Sena. He also informed its cadres that they will work to resolve disputes with Sena at the local level.

The meeting was held at the Yashwantrao Chavan auditorium in Marine Lines. The other senior ministers and leaders who attended the meeting included Jayant Patil, Dhananjay Munde, Nawab Malik, Anil Deshmukh among others.

Despite discontent and differences over several issues, MVA had recently completed its first year in the government. Pawar also had a talk with all the NCP cabinet members and candidates who were defeated during the 2019 assembly elections. He sought information from the defeated candidates on their debacle and measures to be taken for strengthening the organization at all levels.

Moreover, NCP inducted 18 rebel Congress corporators, including Bhiwandi-Nizampur’s deputy mayor Imran Ali Mohammad Khan, which may not go down well with the Congress leading to another tussle in the ruling MVA government.

Elections to the gram panchayats are scheduled to be held on January 15. While no symbol is allotted to contesting candidates, according to reports, most of the heads of the gram panchayats belong to the BJP.
